Research:

In the Institute for Technology of Nuclear and other mineral raw materials Slavica Mihajlovic in the frame of the preparation of her doctoral dissertation, deals with the study of the mechanism of stearic acid binding to the surface of mineral calcite. Tests related to this issue raised by the issue of the projects which are reported to the Ministry of Science of Serbia for a period of 01 04. 2008th 31 03. 2011. Year is:

hDevelopment of material-acceptors, donors and carriers of active substances based on Zeolite, Bentonite and limestone, the number 19022
hDevelopment and application of mechano-chemical procedures for valorization treatment of mineral waste, number 19021

Procedures of surface modification by calcite organic modifiers can significantly improve the quality of limestone, like filler for application in polymer industry. The subject of the doctoral dissertation is examined the influence of different procedures of surface modification of natural calcite quality obtained filler, as well as determining the optimal amount of surface modifier ceiling necessary for obtaining the desired characteristics.
As a way of surface activation calcite stearic acid significantly determines the structure and properties of organic film on the surface of minerals, the goal of this dissertation is to determine whether the different activation procedures (wet and dry process) can get ceiling satisfactory characteristics for use in polymer industry. In addition, as formation the monolayer on the surface of calcite depends on the content of stearic acid used for activation, the aim of thesis is to determine the optimum amount of surface modifier ceiling necessary for obtaining the desired characteristics. Since the process of surface modification place physical-chemical processes on the surface of calcite, a scientific goal of this dissertation is to determine the mechanism of stearic acid binding to the surface of calcite.

In her doctoral dissertation Slavica Mihajlovic deals activating surface calcite stearic acid. As a starting sample for testing use limestone with a high content of calcite. Modifying the surface of calcite is done by wet and dry process, while adding various amounts of stearic acid. Depending on the amount of added stearic acid, is expected to obtain products of different degrees hydrophobic characteristics. For product activation will be examined, as the presence of different amounts of stearic acid affects the level of hydrophobic characteristics. It is expected that the research to determine whether and wet and dry process receive ceiling similar characteristics, and determine the most optimal amount of stearic acid, which will give the best modification of calcite. It is expected that this researches are showing the point to the mechanisms of binding stearic acid to the surface of calcite. Apropos, the goal of adding limestone to calcite with modified surface to the polymer is to improve the mechanical properties of final product, testing will be done in this direction. Namely, the mechanical properties of examiners at the products that are obtained by mixing PVC and limestone containing calcite with varying degrees of coating.
Slavica Mihajlovic doctoral dissertation titled "Physico-chemical modification of the calcite surface by stearic acid" officially reported to the Mining and Geology Faculty in Belgrade.
As a result of these tests was developed a number of papers published in journals and scientific conferences.
