Project TR – 34002

The development of casting technologies under the influence of electromagnetic field and technologies of hot plastic forming of 7000 series aluminium alloys for special purposes

Duration:                   2011 – 2014
Funded by:                Ministry of Education and Science of Republic of Serbia
Organization:            Institute for Technology of Nuclear and Other Mineral Raw Materials –  ITNMS, Belgrade
Project leader:          Zvonko Gulišija, PhD, principal research fellow

Objectives:

This project will encompass research and development of a casting process technology under the influence of electromagnetic field, for an Al-alloy selected from EN AW-7000 series. The research will comprise casting without electromagnetic field and a series of castings under the influence of electromagnetic field, with different operating parameters. Comprehensive mechanical and microstructural characterization will indicate the optimal casting conditions which will provide a satisfactory microstructure and mechanical properties and will enable elimination of technological operations such as pressing and machining and shortening of the homogenization annealing duration. This investigation leads to obtaining high quality and competitive products, with a considerable saving of energy and time. For some parts from the production line of the participating enterprise, which are made of the selected alloy, the numerical simulation of hot forging process using the software SIMUFACT.FORMING 8.1 will be done. For real forgings and different starting materials - alloy obtained by conventional casting process and alloy casted with the influence of electromagnetic field, this numerical modeling will provide a reliable stress-strain analysis of hot forging process in 3D space. These researches will form a new hot processing database of that alloy, especially in the area of flow curves for different deformation rate ranges. Results of numerical simulations will enable better approach to construction forging tools and optimization of the process, which significantly raises the technological level of hot forging process.
